What brands Bangladesh on the global stage? Ready-made garments? Remittances? It could be anything, but not technology - at least not yet. However, the story has a twist. The country has developed a startup ecosystem, with technology at its forefront. From ride-sharing to food delivery, fintech to e-commerce, technology-driven companies are changing not only how people in Bangladesh live and work, but also how the world perceives the nation itself.

Pathao: A Tech-Driven Super-App Easing Daily Life

Take Pathao, for example. The homegrown ride-sharing platform has now turned into a tech champion.

Launched in 2015, Pathao rapidly transformed from a local courier service into a multi-service ‘super-app’ that links millions of Bangladeshis to rides, food and parcel deliveries, payments and B2B logistics. The company’s app-first approach matches GPS-enabled riders with customers using real-time location data and dynamic dispatch.

Pathao’s growth was fuelled both by venture capital and technology choices. A 2018 funding round led by Gojek and Openspace reportedly topped USD 10 million and pushed the company’s valuation to USD 100 million. It allowed the company to expand services and invest in product and engineering.

On the engineering side, Pathao uses modern cloud systems to manage large numbers of location updates, orders, and payments. The company relies on MongoDB Atlas as its main database, which helps collect and process all events. This setup allows Pathao to quickly develop new features, match drivers with customers almost instantly, test surge pricing, and detect fraud.

According to Pathao’s website, the app has been downloaded millions of times and completed tens of millions of trips and orders. This shows many people use the app often for rides, food delivery, and parcel services. These big numbers support Pathao’s claim that it has helped many lives and is one of the top tech companies in Bangladesh.

Besides its products and technology, Pathao created new job opportunities by signing up many bike and car drivers. With its in-app payment feature (Pathao Pay), the platform made informal work and payments digital, making it easier to track and improving the experience for customers in city delivery services.

Foodpanda: Using AI and Data to Redefine Food Delivery

Foodpanda is another example. Since starting in Bangladesh in 2016, it has become a top food and grocery delivery service. The company uses advanced technology to make city life easier and more convenient.

As of late 2023, Foodpanda Bangladesh serves over 250,000 quick-commerce customers monthly and has onboarded more than 120,000 riders nationwide, with about 15,000 new riders added in 2023 alone, generating significant new income opportunities.

Foodpanda’s technology backbone is built on real-time GPS tracking and AI-powered route optimisation, which enables delivery within 30 to 45 minutes in congested cities like Dhaka, Chattogram, and Sylhet. This high-efficiency logistics system balances rider availability and customer demand, reducing wait times and maximising order fulfilment rates.

Besides restaurant delivery, Foodpanda’s Pandamart service has grown quickly, helping more than 6,000 small and medium businesses in Bangladesh go digital. Pandamart uses data and demand predictions to keep the right amount of stock and deliver groceries and essentials fast, usually within an hour.

The platform uses smart computer programs to suggest items based on what users have ordered before, making the experience more personal. It also changes delivery fees in real time depending on things like busy times and traffic, which helps run the service more smoothly.

By integrating cutting-edge technology with local market needs, Foodpanda has firmly positioned itself as a catalyst for digital transformation, economic inclusion, and convenience in Bangladesh’s rapidly evolving urban landscape.

bKash: Driving Financial Inclusion With Digital Innovation

While talking about tech-driven innovation companies, bKash, another homegrown fintech giant, rightfully deserves a spot.

bKash was launched in 2011 as a joint venture between BRAC Bank and Money in Motion. Today, it has become Bangladesh’s leading mobile financial service provider. Operating under the jurisdiction of Bangladesh Bank, bKash offers a range of services, including money transfers, bill payments, mobile recharges, and microloans, all accessible via a mobile app or USSD code for feature phone users.

The company built its technology to serve all kinds of people in Bangladesh. The bKash app, started in 2018, is easy to use and lets customers make safe and fast transactions. For people without smartphones, there is a USSD code that works simply, so even those in remote places can use financial services.

bKash’s backend infrastructure supports millions of transactions daily, ensuring scalability and reliability. The platform’s integration with various banks and financial institutions enables seamless fund transfers and bill payments, fostering a more inclusive financial ecosystem.

From ride-sharing to food delivery, fintech to e-commerce, technology-driven companies are changing not only how people in Bangladesh live and work, but also how the world perceives the nation itself.

Security is paramount in bKash’s operations. The platform uses two-step verification, PIN codes, and QR code scanning to protect users’ transactions. It also follows rules set by the Bangladesh Bank, making sure it is safe and trusted by its users.

Besides basic financial services, bKash now offers digital savings and small loans by working with banks. This shows bKash’s dedication to using technology to give more complete financial help to people in Bangladesh who don’t have full access to banks.

Through its innovative use of technology, bKash has played a pivotal role in promoting financial inclusion in Bangladesh, empowering individuals and businesses alike to participate in the digital economy.

The Final Word

The success of tech-enabled companies like Pathao, Foodpanda, and bKash is a win for Bangladesh. These businesses serve as case studies, demonstrating the country’s ability to innovate and adapt technology to meet local challenges. By successfully integrating advanced technologies such as AI, real-time analytics, and secure mobile platforms, they have created scalable models that improve urban mobility, digital payments, and food delivery.

As case studies, they inspire entrepreneurs, inform policymakers, and showcase the country’s progress in building a digital economy. Ultimately, these success stories position Bangladesh as an emerging hub for technological innovation in South Asia and beyond.
