For many Bangladeshi startups, climate resilience is no longer a niche sector. It's becoming a business opportunity with real social impact. Entrepreneurs are finding ways to solve everyday challenges while addressing bigger environmental issues, whether that's connecting farmers to finance, turning waste into valuable materials, or expanding access to renewable energy. The following ventures demonstrate how innovation and sustainability are increasingly going hand in hand.

SOLshare

To truly tackle Bangladesh’s energy challenges, the country requires an infrastructure that is flexible, local, and easy to access. This is exactly where SOLshare operates, a pioneering climate-tech company launched in late 2014 by its co-founders, including CEO Dr Sebastian Groh. The company originally built its success on a massive national resource: Bangladesh's 6 million existing Solar Home Systems (SHS). Seeing that up to 30 per cent of the solar energy collected by individual home panels was going completely to waste once their private batteries were full, SOLshare designed a revolutionary solution known as the SOLgrid. They introduced the SOLbox, an intelligent, bi-directional Internet of Things (IoT) electricity meter.

The value of this approach goes far beyond basic rural energy access. It shows how growing economies can rethink public infrastructure entirely, moving away from rigid, one-way systems toward adaptive networks. Over the years, SOLshare has expanded this technology from rural village grids into urban areas, launching its SOLmobility business line. This initiative provides smart, efficient lithium-ion batteries and solar-integrated charging stations for Bangladesh's massive fleet of electric three-wheelers (easy-bikes), helping millions of everyday drivers lower their charging costs.

Drinkwell Bangladesh

Drinkwell was co-founded in 2013 by social entrepreneur Minhaj Chowdhury to directly tackle South Asia’s massive water contamination crisis. The venture took off after pivoting from rural charity initiatives to a market-driven urban service model. In 2017, the company formed a successful public-private partnership with the Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (Dhaka WASA). Instead of relying on expensive home delivery or traditional water pipelines, Drinkwell instals automated "Water ATM" booths directly at local pump stations. Customers use a prepaid smart card to tap and dispense pure water for just 40 paisa per litre, a fraction of the cost of boiled or bottled alternatives.

The breakthrough behind this model is its advanced technology. The systems use a unique, patented nanotechnology-based resin platform known as "Hybrid Ion Exchange" (HIX), which completely removes dangerous heavy metals like arsenic, fluoride, and iron from groundwater. Unlike standard filtration systems that need constant filter replacements, these heavy-duty resins can be recharged and reused for over a decade, drastically reducing operational costs.

Today, Drinkwell operates a number of water ATMs across major urban hubs like Dhaka, Chattogram, and Khulna, providing safe, reliable drinking water to over one million citizens daily. The system tracks real-time usage via digital apps and creates hundreds of formal operating jobs within local communities.

iFarmer

Growing a successful harvest is only half the battle; the harder part is often finding the money to buy supplies, getting fair prices from buyers, and navigating the transport networks needed to turn hard work into a reliable income.

iFarmer was launched in 2018 by its co-founders, CEO Fahad Ifaz and COO Jamil M Akbar, to completely change this setup. The platform addresses a massive gap in the market: nearly 80 per cent of the country's smallholder farmers cannot access formal loans from traditional banks due to a lack of credit history. To fix this, iFarmer developed a unique, data-driven credit-scoring algorithm that assesses a farmer's creditworthiness using data points like asset base and transaction histories. The startup enables this model through its iharvst application, which safely connects interested funders and financial institutions directly with agricultural and livestock projects.

To support farmers at every step of the season, iFarmer deployed Sofol, a proprietary mobile application used by field agents and partner retailers to onboard farmers, complete digital KYC verifications, and monitor farm progress. Beyond funding, the company provides low-cost, collateral-free financing under its Folon initiative, alongside high-quality seeds and fertilisers distributed through a physical network of branded iFarmer centres. The platform also uses remote sensing technology to text smart, real-time agricultural advice directly to farmers' phones.

By managing everything from the initial input to a forward market linkage that sells harvested produce directly to corporate buyers, iFarmer bypasses exploitative middlemen. This full-stack approach has already supported tens of thousands of farming households across multiple districts, significantly increasing their daily earnings.

BRTL - Go Sustainable

BD Recycle Technologies Limited (BRTL) is a pioneering clean-tech venture launched in 2018 by its founder, Syed Amin, to completely formalise the waste and recycling industry. The startup operates an integrated digital marketplace, driven by web and Android applications, that connects corporate offices, households, and massive manufacturing plants directly with verified recycling networks. To solve the tricky challenge of sourcing quality materials, BRTL introduced GreenFlow — a unique supplier-financing tool that provides interest-free working capital to small, informal waste pickers and scrap dealers, over 30 percent of whom are women.

This bottom-up approach creates a fully traceable, transparent supply chain that prevents solid waste from ending up in local landfills. The company has already recycled thousands of metric tons of plastic waste while successfully integrating hundreds of informal waste workers into the mainstream economy — tripling their average daily income. Through its data-driven system, BRTL provides official "Impact Certificates" that allow large commercial clients, including top local brands like Shwapno, Chaldal, and major industrial entities like the Urmi Group, to track their carbon footprint reduction and prepare for upcoming green manufacturing regulations.

Fashol

The multiple layers between farmers, shopkeepers, and consumers often drive up costs, cause delays, and make it hard to track where food comes from or where it is needed most. Fashol was launched to fix these bottlenecks by building a digital farm-to-business marketplace. Founded in 2019 by tech entrepreneurs Sakib Hossain, Mamunur Rashid, and Numair Hussain, the startup has raised over $1 million in funding from major global and local investors like SOSV, Orbit Startups, and the founders of Foodpanda Bangladesh. Fashol's entire ecosystem runs on proprietary in-house software split into two digital products: Jogaan, a dedicated mobile application for farmers, and Hyperfarm, a procurement platform built for commercial buyers.

The operational magic of this model happens within an 18-to-24-hour window. Field agents use Jogaan to register farmers right at the source, tracking live market data from over 200 regional markets to guarantee fair pricing before weighing the produce. Once collected, the goods travel to one of Fashol’s 40 plus regional distribution hubs, where a strict four-tier grading and washing process is applied. The startup then utilises its own fleet of vehicles and delivery routes to move tonnes of fresh fruits and vegetables daily directly to the doorsteps of over 7,000 active urban buyers — ranging from local corner shops and popular restaurants to massive quick-commerce platforms and international exporters. By eliminating traditional wholesale middlemen, Fashol ensures that farmers receive secure mobile wallet payouts within 24 hours rather than waiting weeks for late settlements. This highly efficient network has already prevented over 15,000 metric tons of post-harvest food loss.

Green Delta Insurance

Green Delta Insurance is one of Bangladesh’s leading public non-life insurance companies looking at how insurance can help people adapt to climate change. Launched as a public limited company in 1985, the firm has become a pioneer in local climate finance. Working in partnership with global organisations like the International Finance Corporation (IFC) since 2015, Green Delta introduced the country’s first Weather Index-Based Crop Insurance. Instead of requiring long, complex manual field assessments after a disaster, this smart system uses automated satellite data and GPS tracking. When specific environmental triggers are hit — such as a prolonged heatwave, severe drought, or excessive rainfall — the system automatically calculates the loss and sends payouts directly to the farmers' mobile wallets via services like bKash.

This approach is part of a larger shift toward building data-driven financial safety nets. Through key local partnerships with major institutions like BRAC, Oxfam, and the SAJIDA Foundation, Green Delta has scaled these inclusive insurance products to protect tens of thousands of marginal farmers and smallholder businesses across vulnerable regions like the Haor wetlands. While insurance cannot stop extreme weather from happening, providing rapid recovery capital completely changes how communities bounce back.

EcoBrix

The project, known as EcoBrix, was launched by the Deshbandhu Group under the leadership of its Chairman, Golam Mustafa, as part of a massive new investment in green manufacturing in early 2024. Being built on a large 50-acre site in Hatikumrul, Sirajganj, the facility aims to hit full-scale production by 2028. The venture focuses on taking low-value plastics, like single-use bags and packaging that usually clog up drains and landfills, and transforming them into durable building materials. By melting down plastic waste and mixing it with sand, the company creates alternative bricks and paving blocks. These products are not only lighter and more weather-resistant than traditional clay bricks, but their production also avoids the heavy air pollution caused by conventional brick kilns.

This approach is part of a larger movement toward circular manufacturing, where waste is used as a raw material for new industries rather than being left to pile up in nature. Making this system work on a larger scale is a massive task. It requires reliable collection networks, proper factory space, public support, and construction companies that are willing to switch to green building materials.

However, as businesses face more pressure to adopt sustainable practices, the market for these recycled products is growing.
